In this lesson, we introduce traumatic brain injury (TBI), including concussions, and explore considerations for supporting students and clients who have experienced a brain injury.

Objective

Be familiar with traumatic brain injury (TBI) and concussions, including their potential effects, and considerations for supporting students and clients who have experienced a brain injury.

Description

Define and differentiate concussions, traumatic brain injuries (TBIs), and mild traumatic brain injuries (mTBIs). Review prevalence statistics. Identify common physical, cognitive, emotional, and sensory symptoms associated with TBIs, including challenges that may not be immediately visible to others. Cite research related to neuroplasticity, nervous system regulation, mindfulness, yoga, and recovery support for individuals with brain injuries. Explore best practices and teaching considerations for working with students who have experienced a TBI, including pacing, environmental considerations, communication strategies, and nervous system-informed approaches. Review a list of therapies and interdisciplinary supports that may complement yoga and movement-based practices in supporting recovery and quality of life for individuals living with the effects of traumatic brain injury.
