In this lesson, we explore the fundamental role of sleep and analyze the profound impact that sleep quality has on health and disease.

Objective

Understand the core physiology of sleep and how sleep quality serves as a primary driver of physical, mental, and emotional well-being — and how its disruption contributes to disease.

Description

Explore the underlying physiology of sleep, including  sleep stages, circadian rhythms, the internal “body clock,” and the unique variations in individual sleep patterns. Identify fifteen specific aspects of daily life — from cognitive function to emotional regulation —  that are directly dictated by how well or how poorly we sleep. Examine a dozen or more specific health problems and chronic conditions that poor sleep can directly trigger or exacerbate. Review current clinical research regarding sleep science and the systemic effects of chronic sleep deprivation.
