Lesson Overview

In this lesson, we introduce the foundational anatomy of the musculoskeletal system, including bones, joints, and muscles.

Objective

Be familiar with musculoskeletal terminology and foundational anatomy, focusing on the structure and function of bones, joints, and muscles to lay the groundwork for subsequent lessons that dig deeper into each.

Description

Define the skeleton and discuss the components of the musculoskeletal system, including the inseparable structural continuum and interrelationships. Analyze the seven primary functions of the musculoskeletal system. Define the form, function, and cellular behavior of bones, including development and remodeling. Define joints and distinguish between the major structural and functional types, including friction-reducing structures like bursae. Classify and describe the distinct types and roles of muscle tissue.
