In this lesson, we introduce tonglen, walking meditation, eye gazing and more meditation techniques.

Objective

Be knowledgeable about the practice of tonglen (including a more accessible variation) and be familiar with other meditation techniques such as walking meditation, eye gazing and more.

Description

Define the word “tonglen” and explain the purpose of the practice. Provide a caution related to this technique. Describe a tonglen variation that Pema Chodron teaches to focus on one’s own discomfort rather than that of others. Describe mudra-based meditations, a practice of acknowledging inner voices called “Big Mind,” and meditation focused on emotions. Discuss and describe walking meditation. Discuss joriki from Zen meditation and its relationship to dharana and samadhi in the yoga tradition. Describe eye gazing.
