Objective

Be familiar with the meaning and significance of AUM, also known as Om.

Description

Describe “Om” and what it represents. Explain how “Om” and “AUM” relate. Pronounce each of the sounds in AUM, and explain what each represents, including the significance of silence at the end of the mantra. Describe each aspect of the Sanskrit symbol for Om. Discuss how contemplation of the meaning of Om while chanting is said to affect one’s consciousness. Describe some of the ways in which ancients and modern teachers have taught Om as the sound of the Universe. Note other teachings that are associated with Om.
