Inclusive & Accepting Word Choice

Lesson Overview

In this lesson, we explore how a teacher’s word choice shapes the tone of a class and contributes to creating a respectful and welcoming practice space.

Objective

Build skill in using language that supports an inclusive and respectful environment for all students.

Description

Examine the implications of terms such as “minority” versus “diversity.” Identify ways teaching language can unintentionally imply hierarchy, value, or accomplishment. Explore the benefits of invitational language, with clear examples of how to apply it. Distinguish between invitational language and unclear or non-committal instruction. Recognize and reflect on assumptions teachers may make about students’ relationships with their bodies. Review the Accessible Yoga article, “Disability Culture 101.”
