Lesson Overview

In this lesson, we introduce the anatomy of the thorax and rib cage, and the fundamental physiology of the respiratory system.

Objective

Develop a foundational understanding of thoracic anatomy and respiratory physiology, including how breathing is initiated.

Description

Describe the anatomy of the thorax and rib cage, including key structures and their functions. Define breathing and respiration. Explain the mechanisms that drive breathing and its essential role in maintaining life. Identify the contents of the thoracic and abdominal cavities and describe how these regions change during breathing. Understand why the lungs cannot actively move on their own and identify the primary muscle responsible for breathing. Describe the structure and function of the diaphragm, including its movement during relaxed breathing. Discuss potential problems affecting the diaphragm and how they impact respiration.
