Lesson Overview

In this lesson, we introduce foundational considerations in building a mantra practice and using a mala.

Objective

Be familiar with the effects, traditional techniques, and considerations for building a foundational mantra practice and using a mala.

Description

Outline the foundational guidelines, practical mechanics, and energetic principles of a mantra practice. Discuss Dr. David Frawley’s protocols for preparing the mind and transitioning from audible to silent chanting, the impact of rapid versus slow pacing, and the ethical timeline required before teaching a mantra to others. Describe the two essential qualities of practice taught by Girish and provide a suggested approach for mantra selection. Define “mala” and explain what it’s used for. Provide the name, meaning and purpose of the one bead on a mala that is different. Explain the traditional way in which a mala is held and why the same mala is not traditionally used for all mantras.
