Adaptation Principles

Teaching Standard

Be aware of adaptation principles that can serve as a foundation for making in-class decisions.

Assessment

  1. In yoga teaching, what is meant by “adaptation?”
  2. Differentiate yoga teaching adaptation from yoga therapy.
  3. Name four topics to become familiar with as background knowledge before considering how to approach an individual situation.
  4. Why is it important to know if a student is taking pain medication?
  5. What might be considered a first priority when considering adaptations?
  6. Describe an additional five principles that can serve as a general approach when addressing an individual situation.
  7. Expand on the how the presumption of inherent worthiness and wholeness is related to yoga teaching.

Trauma Informed Teaching

Teaching Standard

Be familiar with foundational considerations related to trauma-sensitive teaching, and review specific tactics for promoting emotional and psychological safety in the classroom.

Assessment

  1. Why is an awareness of trauma-sensitive teaching useful and important for all teachers?
  2. What is at the heart of trauma-sensitive teaching?
  3. Give five trauma-sensitive teaching guidelines.
  4. Describe a consideration regarding the act of coming to a public class.
  5. Discuss the difference in approach to moving about the classroom in typical teaching vs. trauma-sensitive teaching.
  6. Describe considerations regarding verbalizing in a trauma-sensitive way.
  7. Discuss touch from a trauma-sensitive perspective.
  8. What are two common triggers and how can you avoid them?
  9. What could indicate a student is being triggered and how might you respond?

Working with Pain

Teaching Standard

Cite research on the effectiveness of yoga with pain and apply knowledge of anatomy, physiology and yoga tools to adapt practices for pain.

Assessment

  1. When a student is experiencing pain in yoga, what are three foundational priorities?
  2. How can Hatha Yoga improve one’s ability to interpret and evaluate sensation?
  3. Describe how to use the breath as a guide in evaluating sensation.
  4. Becoming more skillful in evaluating sensation can lead to greater awareness related to suffering. Explain.
  5. If a student begins practice with a high pain level, how might they approach their practice?
  6. When experiencing pain, which asanas should be approached with caution or avoided?
  7. Why is it recommended to practice in a way that brings relaxation and nervous system balance?
  8. Describe how to approach movement when experiencing pain.
  9. What yoga tools apart from asana may be supportive for students who are working with pain?

Hypermobility & Hyperextension

Teaching Standard

Be familiar with the characteristics of musculoskeletal health and issues, particularly hyperextension and hypermobility, and teaching techniques to optimize joint health, especially for students with hypermobile joints.

Assessment

  1. Describe a healthy musculoskeletal system and the effects of optimally functioning joints.
  2. List potential issues related to musculoskeletal health.
  3. Describe potential consequences of diminished mobility.
  4. Describe potential consequences of excessive mobility.
  5. Discuss how hypermobility may be misunderstood as “being good at yoga.”
  6. Describe the ways in which yoga practice is a powerful tool for optimizing musculoskeletal balance.
  7. Comment on using asana to move joints through their healthy range of motion.
  8. Provide general considerations to keep in mind to optimize joint health.
  9. Provide general asana practice techniques that can help to optimize joint health with all students.
  10. Describe hyperextension.
  11. Provide examples of addressing hyperextension.
  12. Define joint hypermobility and discuss considerations regarding the number of hypermobile joints a person has.
  13. Describe the felt sense of being in a hypermobile body.
  14. Discuss teaching considerations and techniques for students with hypermobile joints.
  15. Describe ways to teach students with hypermobility how to stretch in ways to avoid excessive joint movement

Pregnancy & Yoga Introduction

Teaching Standard

Know the criteria for determining when it’s appropriate to accommodate a pregnant student in a general class and when it’s advisable to refer to a Prenatal Yoga Class.

Assessment

  1. Why do yoga teachers need to understand how to accommodate pregnant students?
  2. What’s the difference between a general yoga class and a Prenatal Yoga Class?
  3. The first question to answer when a pregnant student attends a general class is whether you should refer out or accommodate the student. What three facts will guide you in answering that question?
  4. When is it strongly advisable to refer a student to a Prenatal Yoga Class rather than accommodating her in a general class?
  5. A pregnant student experiences more instability and a greater chance of overstretching and hyperextending joints. Why?
  6. Why are pregnant students more likely to experience light-headedness or dizziness? How should a yoga practice accommodate this?
  7. Yoga teachers are advised to be prepared and to engage with students regarding pregnancy. Describe.

Pregnancy Adaptations by Trimester

Teaching Standard

Be aware of general safety cautions, plus guidelines and suggestions for each trimester.

Assessment

  1. What conditions cannot safely be accommodated in a general class and should prompt a referral to a Prenatal Yoga Class?
  2. What is the primary caution related to breathing?
  3. What type of breathing practices are best for pregnant students?
  4. Describe general safety cautions related to heat and heart rate.
  5. What two general practice guidelines are given due to the hormonal changes that cause muscles, ligaments and tendons to relax?
  6. What is a potential alternative for poses that are typically practiced on the belly?
  7. What is an alternative for supine poses?
  8. Describe a resting pose that can be used as needed throughout class.
  9. What additional safety suggestions apply to the first trimester?
  10. What additional safety suggestions apply to the second trimester?
  11. What is an additional consideration during the third trimester?
  12. What poses are contraindicated during pregnancy?
